The
Institute for Education and the Arts was pleased to partner with
the New Mexico Public Education Department, along with government

in the development of the National Overture of Education and
the Arts in New Mexico, which ocurred throughout New Mexico
between February and April 2004.
The
National Overture

included performances, lectures, roundtable discussions, professional
development activities for educators, and other activities designed
to further the role of the arts in the core curriculum of schools.
Update - September 2005
After the conclusion of the National
Overture of Education and the Arts in New Mexico, IEA returned
to Washington, DC, to write the report on the year’s work
in New Mexico and to begin to develop more specific plans for follow
up activities.
IEA continues to meet with education, community, arts
and cultural organization representatives to identify needs and
opportunities for professional development and to identify and facilitate
the development of local partnerships between schools and organizations.
In addition, IEA is consulting with and facilitating
school-based seminars for principals, teachers and artists on furthering
the integration of the arts in schools. IEA has developed a statewide
New Mexico Advisory Committee.
The Institute has published the report on the Roundtable Discussion
held at NDI-NM as part of the National Overture, entitled A
Discussion of Best Practices in Arts Education: Perspectives on
Meaningful Arts-Integrated Education.
The full
report on the Overture, titled Arts and the Future of
Education, and the Executive
Summary of this report are also available online.
These reports are also available by

A short videotape on the Institute, including footage
from both of the National Overtures
conducted in Michigan and New Mexico, is also available.
