National Overture
of Education and the Arts in Columbus, Ohio
Columbus held its first Steering Committee meeting
on December 2, 2004. In the weeks following this kick off activity,
the community conducted awareness and leadership building sessions
with its educational leaders and school building administrators.
In February of 2005, a leadership development session
was held in Columbus and planning began for the creation of a professional
development series for teachers in the Columbus Public Schools.

Discussion on The Value of Integrating the Arts (PDF)
This roundtable discussion, held February 26, 2005, between several
Columbus, Ohio principals, shares administrators' support for
arts-integrated education and identifies the need for other administrators
to learn more about how the arts bolster student achievement.
This publication provides a unique insight into administrator
perceptions and is a valuable tool for arts advocates and curriculum
leaders.

Literacy, Learning and Arts Education: Building on the African-American
Experience (PDF)
This event, held October 21, 2005, was the first in a series
of professional development workshops for teachers, Teaching Literacy
Through the Arts, developed by the Institute for Education and
the Arts and the Columbus Public Schools. This publication includes
the perspectives of Dr. Cynthia B. Dillard, Associate Professor
at The Ohio State University College of Education, Department
of Teaching and Learning, and Ms. Tei Street, Director of Education
for the City of Columbus, Ohio.
